What Is The Meaning Of President's Day

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) Most people know president's day is a national holiday. For many, it's a day off of work or school. But do you actually know why we celebrate the holiday?

"I think it's to recognize the sacrifice and effort that the president's put forth and it's to honor them and the sacrifice that they have done and their families have made," said Nada Holcomb, a Kimberly resident.

"Well it's a tribute to the presidents of our country and what they stand for, it's stands for liberty," said JoeMae Stone of Twin Falls.

While many local and state government offices close in observance of "president's day," federal offices closed for Washington?s Birthday, a holiday to honor the first president of the United States.

"I think it?s about how we celebrate all of our presidents being, telling us like what we should do and controlling all of our government stuff," said student Tiffany Bryant.

To make the holiday even more confusing, Washington?s Birthday isn't until February 22nd. But in 1979, congress passed the uniform Monday holiday act. That means Washington?s Birthday will be celebrated as a national holiday on the third Monday of February. President's day, Washington?s Birthday, whatever the holiday might be.....for some?

"I'd rather be in school because like, I just like, really like school and I never want to be out of school," said Tiffany Bryant.

A day nonetheless intended to honor all past presidents of the United States.
