Mustapha Salma on hunger strike in protest against the Polisario ...

By Youssef El Kaidi

Morocco World News

Fez, May 20, 2013

The Sahraoui activist Mustapha Weld Sidi Mouloud who is exiled from Tindouf Camps in Algeria for two years and a half so far in Mauritania declared that he will enter in an open hunger strike in front of the delegation of the High Commission for Refugee Aid in Nouakchott starting from May 20th, until the settlement of his status.

Mustapha Salma said in a statement issued on Sunday, May 19 that he made this decision after exhausting all the means of legal communication with the parties concerned with the settlement of his status at the level of the offices of the High Commission of Refugee Aid and the authorities of Mauritania. He noted that he hasn?t yet got any positive response concerning his request to get a passport and his right and the right of his family to reunite and live together in normal circumstances.

The decision of hunger strike comes, according to the statement, ?in waiting for the High Commission of Refugee Aid to fulfill its commitment to finding a solution which may bring my family together after two years and a half of separation and sufferance following my prevention from returning to my children in the Sahraoui refugee camps on the Algerian territory and my exile to Mauritania.?

Mustapha Salma held all the parties concerned with his plight responsible for forcing him to take such a decision and for what might result out of it ?due to their procrastination in the search of a plausible solution and the ignorance they pay to the inhumane conditions that [he]and [his] children undergo.? He appealed to people of conscience in the world to support his right to mobility and the right of his family to reunite with him.

Following his ?explicit support? of the Moroccan proposal meant to resolve the conflict in the Sahara on the basis of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty; Mr. Mustapha Salma Weld Sidi Mouloud was kidnapped on September 21st, 2010 by the militias of Polisario upon arrival at the border checkpoint leading to the Tindouf camps and was held in a secret location.

The Sahraoui militant, who served as the General Inspector of the police of Polisario, was released at the end of 2010 and handed to the High Commission of Refugee Aid in Mauritania after an international campaign for his release.

Vermont passes law allowing doctor-assisted suicide

By Jason McLure

(Reuters) - Vermont on Monday became the fourth U.S. state to end legal penalties for doctors who prescribe medication to terminally ill patients seeking to end their own lives.

The law, which includes a number of safeguards over the next three years as the state adapts, marked the first time a U.S. state has used the legislative process to make assisted suicide legal. Oregon and Washington have similar laws passed through ballot measures and a Montana court authorized the practice in 2009.

"Vermonters who face terminal illness and are in excruciating pain at the end of their lives now have control over their destinies. This is the right thing to do," said Governor Peter Shumlin, a Democrat, who signed the law on Monday.

Supporters of the practice are hoping Vermont's law will lend momentum in other states, such as Connecticut and New Jersey, that have considered similar legislation. A bill legalizing the practice failed in Massachusetts last year.

The law allows physicians to prescribe death-inducing medications, which terminally ill patients wishing to commit suicide could then administer to themselves. It limits the prescriptions to residents of the state.

"Vermont's law reflects another normalization of the practice of aid in dying in the practice of medicine," said Kathryn Tucker, director of legal affairs at Compassion and Choices, a group that backed the Vermont law. "Support for patients to be empowered and choose aid and dying is growing. So I think this is an important step in moving that forward."

The Vermont bill is more sweeping than the initiatives passed in Oregon or Washington. As in those two states, it provides a number of safeguards - though the Vermont bill calls for these to expire in 2016.

During the first three years, the law requires ailing patients to make three requests for death-inducing drugs. Both the patient's primary physician and a consulting doctor must agree the patient is suffering from a terminal illness and is capable of making an informed decision to request death-inducing drugs.

After July 1, 2016, the practice of prescribing life-ending medication will be overseen by professional practice standards that govern physician conduct in other aspects of medicine.

The two-tiered approach was instituted as a compromise between legislators who preferred Oregon's model of legal safeguards and others who objected to what they saw as government interference in end-of-life decisions.

Advocates of assisted suicide say the practice can save years of suffering for patients of painful terminal illnesses, such as bone cancer. Opponents warn that measures allowing it may encourage people to take their own lives at the behest of potential heirs or because they fear they are imposing a burden on family.

True Dignity Vermont, a group that opposed the Vermont law, said it would work with a network of health care providers to help support alternatives to the terminally ill.

"We now have state-sanctioned suicide in Vermont," said Edward Mahoney, president of the group, in a statement. "If the state won't protect Vermonters, we will try."

Is 10 million in a month less disappointing than 5 million in three days?

The iPhone 5 launched to record sales figures; 5 million units sold to customers in the first three days. Samsung's Galaxy S4 has also launched to strong figures; 10 million units shipped in the first 4 weeks. One of these was a 'disappointment,' yet the other is hailed as a triumph. Seems crazy? Well, maybe it is.

For Samsung, 10 million units shipped makes it their fastest selling smartphone release ever, so for the folks from Korea at least, it is indeed a triumph. But, Apple sold -- not shipped -- 5 million units of the iPhone 5 in the first 3 days. Yet compare these two headlines from Businessinsider:

iPhone 5 opening weekend sales come in worse than expected

Samsung's S4 starts strong: 10 million units in less than a month

One story portrays doom and gloom, and the other a more jubilant atmosphere. Analysts called 6 million units for the iPhone 5 the "worst case scenario" for Apple's opening weekend. And yet, they hit half Samsung's first month sales within three days.

We're not going to knock Samsung's figures, 10 million is a lot of phones. But, it does again ask the question; just how much is 'enough' for Apple?

Beatles guitar auctioned off to tune of $408,000

This custom-made electric guitar played by the late John Lennon and George Harrison of the Beatles recently sold at auction.

A custom-made electric guitar played by the late John Lennon and George Harrison of the Beatles sold at a New York auction on Saturday for $408,000, said officials with the company behind the event.

The semi-hollow-body guitar, manufactured by the VOX company, was sold to an unidentified U.S. buyer at the "Music Icons" event organized by Beverly Hills, California-based Julien's Auctions and held at the Hard Rock Cafe in Manhattan.

Julien's said previously it expected the guitar, which was the centerpiece of Saturday's sale, to fetch between $200,000 and $300,000.

Harrison played the instrument, distinguished by two symmetrical flared shoulders on the upper body, while practicing "I Am The Walrus," and Lennon used it in a video session for the song "Hello, Goodbye," according to a statement from Julien's Auctions.

Both songs were on the Beatles' 1967 album "Magical Mystery Tour."

The VOX guitar was a prototype instrument custom-built for Lennon in 1966, said Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien's. Lennon gave the VOX guitar as a gift in 1967 to Yanni "Magic Alex" Mardas, who was the electronics engineer for the band's Apple Records label, the auction house said.

The instrument, displayed in recent weeks at a museum in Ireland before the sale, was sold a few years ago by Christie's Auction House for a little over $100,000. Nolan said the latest buyer, who sent a representative to Saturday's auction to bid on his behalf, wished to remain anonymous.

Lennon was shot to death in New York in 1980 by a deranged fan, and Harrison died of lung cancer in Los Angeles in 2001. The surviving members of the Beatles are Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.

'Catching Fire' dampened but not drowned at Cannes

CANNES, France (AP) ? Little could lessen the fever-pitched excitement for "Hunger Games: Catching Fire," but heavy rain nevertheless dampened the film's lavish Cannes party.

Stars of the "Hunger Games" sequel, Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Sam Clafin, arrived Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival. "Catching Fire," perhaps more than any other film not actually screening at Cannes, is seeking to use the festival's global platform to promote the highly anticipated sequel.

Digital flame billboards have constantly burned by the Majestic Barriere hotel. The cast posed for photographers Saturday. And in the evening, Lionsgate held a lavish soiree beside the beach on the Croisette, complete with flowing liquid chocolate and parading models dressed in the film's ornate costumes.

But a planned stunt at the party to promote the film was scuttled due to the poor weather that has plagued the first five days of the French Riviera festival. Lawrence made an enthusiastic appearance, but later fled, grimacing ? like other guests ? at the cold raindrops.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" will be released in late November.
