Instagram adds Photo Page to web: new colors, user comments, not much else

instagram-photo-page-new-colors-user-comments

Instagram's been moving along briskly with its Android and iOS apps, but the hipster-tinter-photo-sharing-Facebook acquisition's web presence has been lagging behind in comparison. But there's good news now if you're desk-bound thanks to the new "Photo Page," which lets you log in, change your profile and add comments or likes to images. The other tweak is a fresh look for the site, matching the app with a blue, dare we say, Facebook-esque theme and larger images, no doubt to show off those mega-megapixel smartphone cameras. It's likely a first step in unifying its web offering and apps, and with a name like Photo Page, no one can accuse it of wasting that Facebook booty on marketing whizzes.

Debilitating eyesight problems are on the decline for older Americans

CHICAGO --- Today's senior citizens are reporting fewer visual impairment problems than their counterparts from a generation ago, according to a new Northwestern Medicine study. Improved techniques for cataract surgery and a reduction in the prevalence of macular degeneration may be the driving forces behind this change, the researchers said.

"From 1984 until 2010, the decrease in visual impairment in those 65 and older was highly statistically significant," said Angelo P. Tanna, M.D., first author of the study. "There was little change in visual impairments in adults under the age of 65."

The study, published in the journal Ophthalmology, shows that in 1984, 23 percent of elderly adults had difficulty reading or seeing newspaper print because of poor eyesight. By 2010, there was an age-adjusted 58 percent decrease in this kind of visual impairment, with only 9.7 percent of elderly reporting the problem.

There was also a substantial decline in eyesight problems that limited elderly Americans from taking part in daily activities, such as bathing, dressing or getting around inside or outside of the home, according to the study.

"The findings are exciting, because they suggest that currently used diagnostic and screening tools and therapeutic interventions for various ophthalmic diseases are helping to prolong the vision of elderly Americans," Tanna said.

Tanna is the vice chairman of ophthalmology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and an attending physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Stephen Kaye, of the Institute for Health & Aging and Disability Statistics Center, University of California, is the second author of the study.

The study used self-reported data collected from 1984 to 2010 through two major population-based surveys, the National Health Interview Survey and the Survey of Income and Program Participation.

Survey questions revealed how vision problems can impact the daily activities and quality of life of Americans and helped researchers analyze trends in the prevalence of visual impairment of adults in the United States.

While this study didn't identify any of the causes of the change in the prevalence of visual impairment, Tanna said there are three likely reasons for the decline:

  • Improved techniques and outcomes for cataract surgery
  • Less smoking, resulting in a drop in the prevalence of macular degeneration
  • Treatments for diabetic eye diseases are more readily available and improved, despite the fact that the prevalence of diabetes has increased

Future studies should identify which treatment strategies help prevent vision in older adults and then make those treatments available to as many people as possible, Tanna said.

Shaun J. McLaughlin ? Kris Wampler's Blog

Shaun J. McLaughlin believes every writer must be in it for the art, and strives to make his writing stand out from the rest. ?Shaun discusses his success with blogging and what he believes it takes for a writer to succeed.

1. Give me the ?elevator pitch? for your book in five to ten sentences.

My self-published novel, Counter Currents, is a story of smugglers, river pirates,?rebels, love, and war. ?Most scenes are set against the grandeur of the Thousand Islands?during the drama of North America?s forgotten war, the Patriot War of 1838. ?Among?the raiders was Bill Johnston, the Thousand Islands legend. ?The protagonist, Ryan, a?young immigrant, is drawn into Johnston?s world of piracy and secret societies. ?Ryan?falls for Johnston?s daughter, Kate. ?Tugged by the opposing currents of romance and war,?Ryan struggles to reconcile his troubled family history, his duty and his heart. Counter?Currents is history illuminated by fiction.

2. Why did you become an indie writer?

I worked as a writer ? journalist and technical writer ? for over 30 years. ?Since my teens,?I wrote fiction on the side. For my first novel, I queried dozens of agents and publishers?in Canada and the US. ?Over half never responded. One small publisher in Iowa offered to?publish it, but they closed down shortly after I signed the contract. ?Weary of rejection, I?studied the self-publishing arena and the related technologies, and made a decision to be?my own publisher.

3. Have you been traditionally published? ?Why or why not?

I do both. ?In the same month (March 2012) that I self-published my first novel, my first?history book, The Patriot War Along the New York-Canada Border, was published by?South Carolina-based The History Press. ?It covers the eastern half of the Patriot War of?1838.

There is an interesting story behind that. ?I created a history blog in January 2010 in?advance of my novel to help promote the book and the era. ?An editor at The History Press?discovered the blog and asked me to write a book about it. ?I said yes, of course.

4. How have you liked self-publishing so far?

I am astounded at how simple it is to be self-published. ?Between Smashwords,?CreateSpace and Kindle/Amazon, anyone who can follow step-by-step instructions can?produce books in multiple formats. ?There is no barrier to publishing. ?Technology has?sidelined the gatekeepers and unleashed writers. ?You?ve got to love that.

5. Tell me about the marketing techniques you?ve used to sell your books. ?Which ones?have been the most successful?

I have tried most of the popular marketing techniques: blogging, Twitter, Facebook, and?guest posts on other blogs and e-magazines. ?I had both books reviewed, and even paid for?an ad on Goodreads.

My history blog, raidersandrebels.com, is the most successful. ?It gets over 600?visits per month from history lovers. The key is to provide readers with free, interesting?content. ?That blog links to my imprint blog where I describe my books. ?A small?percentage of visitors become customers.

Two history articles that I wrote for the Thousand Islands Life e-magazine early in 2012?did well, as did a book review on that mag. ?The magazine?s audience is in the heart of?the region where both my books take place. ?The exposure led to a regional spike in sales,?especially for the history book.

6. What?s the most important thing you?ve learned about self-publishing that you didn?t?know when you started out?

My research into the business of self-publishing taught me that my book is one of?millions available. ?It is one leaf in a forest of 10,000 trees trying to be noticed. ?You?cannot be in this business for the money. ?Like a painter or musician, you must be in for?the art.

7. If you could do one thing differently in publishing your books, what would it be?

Next time I will spend no time trying to find a publisher for my fiction.

8. Indie authors face the challenge of marketing their books without the resources of?traditional publishers. What advice do you have for an indie just starting out?

From my observation, the authors that succeeded financially did not hit the big time with?their first book. ?They built up a fan base, good book by good book, until they broke out. ?In brief: write well, write often, be patient.

9. What are you currently working on?

I have a detailed outline for the sequel to my novel. ?It will be set partly in Australia,?which I will visit in the fall of 2012 to scout locations. ?I plan to research a second history?book on the Patriot War to cover events along the western front.

10. If you could market your brand ? not just one particular book, but your overall brand?of writing ? in one sentence, what would it be?

I write about history (and by extension, historical fiction) like a good journalist covers?current events: how people face their trials and triumphs never gets dull.

11. How can readers learn more about your books?

My publishing imprint has info on both books: raidersandrebelspress.com.

NATO will exit Afghanistan as Soviets did, through Central Asia

NATO signs deals with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan to truck its military supplies from Afghan war out through Central Asia, giving it options instead of closed Pakistan route.

By Scott Baldauf,?Staff writer / June 5, 2012

A NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) walks toward the police checkpoint in Jalalabad east of Kabul, Afghanistan, last week. NATO will exit Afghanistan through Central Asia, the same route the Soviet troops took after their withdrawal.

NATO may not know the final result of its intervention in Afghanistan, but it now has an exit plan. And the exit will take place through Central Asia, the same route the Soviet troops took after their withdrawal in 1988 and 1989.

As relations worsen between the United States and Pakistan, NATO has signed deals with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan (see map here) to move out the tons of equipment that must be withdrawn by 2014, when NATO makes its final exit from Afghanistan.

Speaking with Agence France-Presse news agency, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that NATO now considers Central Asia and its Russian-built roads to be the most expedient route out of Afghanistan. ?

"These agreements will give us a range of new options and the robust and flexible transport network we need," Mr. Rasmussen said.

Tarnished by more than a decade of war, mutual recriminations, and foreign policy goals that are increasingly at odds, the US-Pakistani relationship now has reached a nadir. From the early post 9/11 days, when NATO received 90 percent of its supplies for the Afghan war through the Pakistani port of Karachi, now Pakistan has cut off NATO?s old supply routes. Last November, Pakistan banned NATO?s use of Pakistani territory after NATO planes mistakenly bombed a Pakistani post, killing 24 Pakistani soldiers.

For Pakistan, the NATO bombing was the last straw, following the violation of its territorial sovereignty last year when US Navy SEALs captured and killed Osama bin Laden in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad.

Exclusive: Lucy Hale Is Going Country On First Album

'I grew up in Tennessee, so that's always been my heart and soul,' the 'Pretty Little Liars' star tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner

Lucy Hale
Photo:

"Pretty Little Liars" star Lucy Hale is expanding her horizons beyond her successful acting career and spreading her wings to (hopefully) soar into an equally successful music career.

The multitalented 23-year-old recently inked a recording deal with Hollywood Records, which is the same label that brought us the chart-topping vocal stylings of Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato.

MTV News was lucky enough to sit down with Hale recently for an exclusive chat about how she came to land a recording contract with Hollywood Records and what plans she has for her first album.

"Some people know, some people don't know: I grew up performing, I grew up singing, and I never knew which route I was going to take," said Hale, who first showcased her singing skills on the talent competition "American Juniors" in 2003. "Acting took off for a while and I booked ['Pretty Little Liars'], and I did a movie last year, 'Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song,' and I played a singer, and so that's sort of how Hollywood [Records heard me]."

Hale then landed a meeting with Hollywood Records head Ken Bunt, who was eager to work with her and wanted to make the music Hale was most passionate about.

"I told him [I wanted to sing] country, so I'm going to do a country/pop album, and I couldn't be more excited," she said. "I grew up in Tennessee, so that's always been my heart and soul. It's hard to come across a true country fan in L.A., but it's true that the fans are so loyal, once you're in their circle, you're in for your entire career. It just really speaks to me. Country music has so much soul and is so heartfelt. I think it's a perfect fit for me. I think it will surprise people."

So which country singers does Hale look to for inspiration?

"I love all [kinds of country artists], but comparing what my sound would be like? A Taylor Swift/ Carrie Underwood-ish hybrid? Obviously, I would kill to have their music careers," she said. "I'm not saying I will have that career, but sound-wise, I would say it's closest to that."

Look for Hale's first country album to hit the airwaves sometime next year.

Fluorescent Bulbs Used Properly Can Save ... - IdeaMarketers.com

What would we all do with out electric powered lights and lightbulbs. We in this day and age, simply enter into a room and immediately reach out for the switch. Lights are just a vital part of how we live. Walking down a dark street is part of days gone by. Regarding fluorescent lights, where would most likely we be without them, the most power effective light bulbs, will be fluorescent light bulbs.

There are lots of lamps in the marketplace these days. Actually there are amazing types like halogen light bulbs and fluorescent bulbs. A wrong understanding, concerning fluorescent lights is the fact that individuals think by using fluorescent bulbs, you do not have to turn off lights to conserve energy. Actually, it is recommended that you switch off fluorescent lights when you are out of a room for more than about 15-20 minutes.

    1. The initial misconception is, that to start a fluorescent takes more power to put on than it requires to run it.

    2. The second misconception is that turning a neon bulb on / off will wear it out.

Like numerous common myths concerning conserving power, there is a small amount of truth. Observe, that regular switching on / off of fluorescent lamps has little impact for a electricity bill. Fluorescent light bulbs have a life, according to how many hours they may be left on each time they are activated. This is usually called burn time, and these lamps or tubes burn time, is three hours.

Electric lights have a rating based on anticipated lifespan, as does fluorescents. Bear in mind operating a light when it is not necessarily required is merely not good or smart, in nowadays where power is our top priority. Do not spend unwisely as well as for no reason at all. With rapidly rising of electrical energy bills, we all need to take a great look at when and how we switch lights on.

With the hard-to-find to the difficult to envision as well as distinctive, Microlamp is really a leader in the retail light bulb company. There focus is specialized lighting products as well as accessories. Visit http://www.microlamp.com and discover a variety of general-lighting bulbs an incredible selection for you the customer. So if you find yourself by having an empty socket, you will find this on-line store with its massive choice of goods will meet your requirement.

    No Name Farm/Ranch: Future Telling

Out of morbid curiosity I peaked back at some one year old blog posts, not quite sure what I'd find, but certain it would bring back all kinds of disgusting memories of the loan-getting/builder-interviewing/life-upside-downing process.

I found some of that, to be sure.? But then I also found this - so absolutely prescient that I shivered.? Especially to realize that exactly one year later - to the day - we brought home another year's worth of hay.? I shook the feeling off fast and went out to pet my snoozing pyrenees and feed the baby goats who (like last year's post says) weren't even born at the time I wrote it.? I guess it wasn't future-telling so much as just making sure things actually happened.?

Damn it feels good, either way.

Writer Unboxed ? 5 Encouraging Reasons To Build Your Writer ...

PhotobucketGIVEAWAY: I?m super pumped to announce that, in six weeks time (Aug, 1, 2012), my new humor book, RED DOG / BLUE DOG: WHEN POOCHES GET POLITICAL, will be released from Running Press. The book is a collection of photos of dogs doing stereotypically liberal and conservative things. I?m giving away a copy to a random commenter. Comment on this post within 1 week. Good luck!?

I understand why people don?t get enthusiastic about platform building. Writers want to?shocker?write, and then (maybe) spend time talking about their writing journey. But building a blog? Tweeting? Volunteering to be a guest contributor to local radio stations? ?If I did that, I wouldn?t have time to write!? is something I hear writers often say.

Building your writer platform means increasing your visibility, reach and network in the marketplace. It means creating channels through which you have the ability to sell books. The planks of platform include a successful blog, social media, article writing, public speaking, and more. In today?s publishing environment, nonfiction authors need platform to get the attention of publishers, whereas fiction authors simply want platform, as it will increase their value.

While creating a platform is not something writers generally get excited about in the morning (?Today, I?m gonna build my platform! I?M SO HAPPY!!!!?), I often tell people that there are definite upsides to the endeavor. Here are 5 off the top of my head:

    1. Platform gives you a degree of control. In a previous WU column, I discussed how frustrating it is to have such a lack of control over the sales of your book. But platform building means you?re establishing concrete, solid connections through media outlets, with other professionals, and/or through social media channels. If you build these avenues, you can use them to sell books later. Creating a platform is an opportunity to, as writer Alexis Grant once put it, ?make your own luck.?

    2. You are your book?s ideal marketer. No one knows the audience(s) of your book like you do. Have you talked to a publicist about marketing a book? What?s the first thing they ask of you? Your list of e-mail contacts! They know you?re the best person to have contacts, so they mine you first. You know who will buy the book; you know where those people live online; and you know the best message to craft to market your work.

    3. Platform is a break from writing. If I sit down to the computer one evening and the inspiration isn?t flowing to crank out a new screenplay, I don?t have to give up on the night?s work. I can still produce by platform building. I can add website elements, or format a blog post, or engage some people over Twitter. It?s easy work that can always be done to further my career. (A word to the wise: Do not get lost in the platform monster. Platform building can be considered ?easier? than writing. So it may be tempting to dedicate a disproportionate amount of your time and energy to it.)

Photobucket4. Platform = money. When you build your platform, you are constructing channels that will help you sell books. And when you do that, you are helping yourself by putting the means in place to sell more copies and make your royalty statement a little bigger. Not only that, but the size of your platform could also influence your advance (upfront money from publishers) ? even for fiction. Young adult novelist Elana Johnson previously said that she attributes an amazing $25,000 of her total advance to successful blogging platforms she had built.

    5. Opportunities to build your platform are everywhere. As you build an online presence and network yourself, always be thinking: How can I use this to get me closer to my goals? Is there a way to use this to help my brand, meet new people, or sell books? Consider this: For years, I?ve posted videos of me playing music on YouTube.com. As view counts increased, I realized that the clips served no larger purpose. So I went into the description for each video and added a note about my first humor book, How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack, then included a link to buy. I don?t know if I?ve sold five books through my adjustment or 150, but I am making an attempt to put all my efforts to good use. (And even if 99.9 percent of those who view the note do not buy the book, they do see the title and therefore learn about the book, building awareness for it. In the world of platform, it all adds up.)

Consider this other scenario to see platform building in action: Let?s say you run a blog all about local businesses in your hometown and want to interview three owners of printing companies in a roundup for your site. If you can make a clear case to owners about how being interviewed is a great opportunity, then you should have no trouble getting people interested. So whom will you interview? I suggest you find three candidates who are on Twitter and have more followers than the rest of the possibilities?then go after those three first. If they have a solid Twitter presence, they will logically spread the word to their followers to notify others of the roundup. This way, they get more eyes on an interview all about their business. Meanwhile, you?re getting more page views because you?re not the only one promoting the post. Everyone wins, and you get new followers because of whom you strategically chose to interview when you had options.

Egypt's new president starts building government

CAIRO (Reuters) - Mohamed Mursi, Egypt's first freely elected president whose powers have already been curbed by the army, began work on a coalition on Monday after touring his new palace, once home of Hosni Mubarak who banned his movement for three decades.

Declared winner on Sunday a week after a tumultuous run-off vote that pitted him against a former air force chief, the Islamist faces the challenge of meeting sky-high expectations in a nation tired of turmoil while the economy is on the ropes.

But his campaign pledge to complete the revolution that toppled Mubarak last year but left the pillars of his rule intact will come up against the entrenched interests of the generals who are in charge of the transition to democracy.

Shortly before the historic presidential vote, a newly elected Islamist-led parliament was dissolved by the army based on a court order, and the generals issued a decree setting limits on the president's remit, which cuts into Mursi's powers to act but exposes him to blame for any failures.

Critics at home and in the West called it a "soft coup".

One pressing concern - on which many Egyptians are likely to judge his performance - will to be to revive the economy of the world's most populous Arab nation.

Monday's stock market rally, at least partly fuelled by relief that the vote and result passed off without violence, may encourage the new president, but he still has to prove to wary longer-term investors that Egypt is on the road to recovery.

Egyptian newspapers welcomed Mursi's win over Ahmed Shafik, Mubarak's last prime minister, as a victory for the people, although many more liberal-minded Egyptians worry his conservative group will slowly whittle away at social freedoms.

Further afield, his win has had an immediate impact beyond Egypt's borders, inspiring Islamists who have risen up against autocrats across the Middle East and swept to power in North Africa. Israel worries its 1979 peace deal with Egypt, never warm, will cool further.

Palestinians in Gaza, however, are delighted.

Iran saw his election as an "Islamic awakening" - though Tehran and the Muslim Brotherhood follow different, often opposing forms of the faith. Iran's Fars news agency published an interview in which Mursi called for restoring full ties between Cairo and Tehran to build strategic "balance". A Mursi aide said he gave the interview 10 days ago.

    DRAMATIC REVERSAL OF FORTUNES

A security official said Mursi, 60, and his wife took a tour of their new home, once Mubarak's main residence - a dramatic change of fortunes full of symbolism for a former political prisoner whose group was pursued remorselessly during Mubarak's 30-year rule.

An aide said Mursi then went to the Defence Ministry for talks with the head of the ruling military council's Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi and the army-appointed Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri. They discussed forming a new government at the meetings, which Egyptians will see as a sign that real power still lies with the army.

As president, Mursi can appoint the cabinet. His aides say he has already reached out to politicians from outside the Brotherhood such as reformist Mohamed ElBaradei, who has yet to publicly respond. But legislative powers remain with the army while the parliament is dissolved, restricting his power to act.

Egypt's army-appointed government, led by al-Ganzouri who also served in the 1990s as prime minister under Mubarak, submitted its resignation on Monday but was asked to stay on temporarily until Mursi, who has yet to take the oath of office, put a team together, Information Minister Ahmed Anis said

"The revolution reaches the republican palace," wrote Al-Shorouk newspaper. Another, Al-Akhbar, quoted from Mursi's victory speech: "I am a servant of the people and an employee of the citizens".

It is a sentiment widely spoken: the sense that at last, perhaps, Egyptians have a leader who can be "fired".

Celebrations in Cairo's Tahrir Square - theatre of the revolution that overthrew Mubarak - extended through the night. Some Brotherhood followers were still celebrating, surprised by their victory that broke a six-decade tradition of presidents plucked from the military.

    "STRENGTH TO NEGOTIATE"

"It was a little surprising that the army acknowledged his win," said 40-year-old teacher Adel Mohamed who was in the square when the result was declared after a nervous week's wait since the vote. "The pressure from the street, from the revolution, will give Mursi strength to negotiate."

From Syria's opposition who are seeking the downfall of President Bashar al-Assad came word that Cairo was again a "source of hope" for a people "facing a repressive war of annihilation".

But millions of Egyptians, and the Western powers, looked on with unease at the prospect of the long-suppressed Brotherhood making good on its dream of an Islamic state.

Israel has been particularly nervous, urging its neighbour to respect their peace deal. It worries that the Brotherhood's win will embolden Palestinian Islamists opposed to Israel.

"Darkness in Egypt," headlined Israeli paper Yedioth Ahronoth. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he "respected" the result and said he saw future cooperation with the new administration.

An aide to Mursi said during Mursi's campaign that he would delegate meetings with Israeli officials to his foreign minister, unlike Mubarak who often met top Israelis. Mubarak went to Israel only once, for the funeral of assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

"Mursi's victory is most likely to strengthen the hand of Hamas in its fight against Israel because it will give it a moral boost," said political scientist Mustapha al-Sayyed.

But the army, determined not to see its $1.3 billion in U.S. military aid a year jeopardised, will probably ensure ties are not undermined even if the relationship sours, diplomats say.

Pledging to uphold international treaties, in a gesture to Israel, Mursi said in his first televised address as president-elect that he would work with others to see the democratic revolution through.

"There is no room now for the language of confrontation," he said, a message addressed not just to the army but to the young, urban revolutionaries who launched last year's uprising only to see the Brotherhood dominate the political scene afterwards.

One of the most influential revolutionary youth groups greeted Mursi's win as a victory for last year's uprising.

"We have defeated the candidate of Mubarak's military state, the candidate of the corrupt 'deep state' that we are fed up with," said the April 6 Youth movement.

"Starting today we will work as one body for Egypt."

    COMPROMISING WITH THE MILITARY

Western powers congratulated Mursi, who received a phone call from U.S. President Barack Obama, offering help.

The White House said in a statement: "The president underscored that the United States will continue to support Egypt's transition to democracy and stand by the Egyptian people as they fulfil the promise of their revolution."

Mursi may have little choice but to compromise with the army, and Brotherhood sources said a package of agreements discussed with generals last week could soon be announced.

The Brotherhood's political gains, first winning the biggest bloc in parliament and then running for president, had rattled the military. With the help of a Mubarak-era judiciary, the military council dissolved parliament on the eve of the presidential vote, then gave itself the legislative power.

Senior Brotherhood officials say they have been negotiating in the past week to change some of that, though both sides deny any haggling over the result of the presidential vote itself.

"President Mursi and his team have been in talks with the military council to bring back the democratically elected parliament and other issues," Essam Haddad, a senior Brotherhood official, told Reuters on Monday.

Brotherhood sources told Reuters they hoped the army might allow a partial recall of parliament and other concessions in return for Mursi exercising his powers to name a government and presidential administration in ways the army approves of - notably by extending appointments across the political spectrum.

Military officials have confirmed discussions in the past few days but had no immediate comment on the latest talks.

Brotherhood officials have said they will press on with street protests to pressure the army but this, along with a number of other contentious issues including to whom and where Mursi swears his oath of office, could be settled soon.

The army wants Mursi sworn in on June 30, meeting a deadline it set itself for handing over Egypt to "civilian rule" - although the military's influence will go on long beyond that.
