CHAPEL HILL--UNC Chapel Hill students, faculty and alumni found out Monday that their outgoing chancellor Holden Thorp will be leaving the university.
This July, Thorp will become the provost of Washington University in St. Louis. The transition means Thorp will no longer return to UNC's chemistry department after stepping down as chancellor.
Thorp has a long history at UNC. He received his bachelors degree at the university, taught chemistry and became chancellor in 2008.
Everyone on campus is surprised and sad to see him go, but said UNC's loss is a big gain for Washington University in St. Louis. After five years at the helm of UNC, not only is Thorp leaving the chancellor seat but he is leaving the university all together.
It comes as a big shock to students and staff.
"People will remember him for what he did, the great things he did. I know he'll be greatly missed,? said UNC sophomore Italia Marr.
Thorp will become the next provost of Washington University and hold an endowed professorship in the departments of chemistry and medicine. He spent Monday on the campus in St. Louis with the institution's Chancellor Mark Wrighton.
During a phone interview with Wrighton, he said Thorp's ability and experience stood out in the large pool of candidates.
"Holden Thorp has a great record of academic achievement.and administrative leadership. he's one of the most respected leaders in higher education,? said Wrighton.
At UNC, Thorp put reforms in place in the wake of two scandals including the NCAA's discovery of improper benefits and academic misconduct within the football program and academic fraud within the Afro and African-American studies department.
Faculty said the new position will give him a fresh start.
"[It is] a surprise but everybody said he's going to land some place else in an academic leadership role and this is a perfect place. It's a great university," said UNC faculty chairperson Jan Boxill.
The search for Thorp's replacement began last fall. Committee head and UNC Board of Trustees Chairman Wade Hargrove hopes to have a new chancellor in place by the time Thorp leaves.
?We are committed in evaluating the qualifications of those individuals and we will be moving forward in the weeks ahead," said Hargrove
In an email to students and faculty, Thorp said his new position will allow him to return to his passion of teaching while continuing the administrative duties he's enjoyed as chancellor.
