Having A 'Bad Romance' With Twitter? - Small Business Online Coach

Alright people, let?s just relax a little bit.

So you?ve been working away at building your Twitter following, engaging with people, re-tweeting stuff you find interesting, taking and posting pictures about your life and business, and following other people, and still you don?t have a huge following. A new study shows that you are OK, and on the right track.

But wait, I want a huge following like:

  • Lady Gaga (@ladygaga)??????????????????????? ? 28,165,471 followers
  • Justin Bieber? (@justinbieber)????????????? 26,343,329 followers
  • Katy Perry (@katyperry) ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 24,720,006 followers
  • Rihanna? (@rihanna)???????????????????????????????? 23,938,718 followers
  • Britney Spears (@britneyspears)????????? 19,346,943 followers

(It should be noted, for my own sanity, that Barack Obama is number six on this list, but then it goes downhill again with Shakira, Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian and YouTube rounding out the top 10.)

Ok, so you?re not Lady Gaga, or The Biebs.? Get over it! ;)

It?s NOT About How Many Followers You Have

The study cited in this article in The Province, says it is who follows you, not how many, that is important.

Be A Twitter Business Belieber

The article explains that a study conducted by researchers from New York University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, focused on 1.3 million Facebook users and focused around the question:

?How much does this person affect other people?s behaviour??

In order to conduct the study the researchers followed the launch of a movie app and how information about it spread, was adopted and the sustained use over a period of 6 weeks. Read more about the study and the results in the article.

What it boils down to for business owners is yes, it is important to have a lot of followers, but it is more important to be a trustworthy source for information and news as well as to be an expert in your field.

?

It?s How About Being a Trustworthy Source

As a business owner it is easy to become this. You are probably already an expert in your field, you just have to show your followers you are, by Tweeting good, useful advice often. You are probably a lot closer than you think to being an influencer.

So don?t be like @onetweetpete. Have fun with Twitter, and don?t worry about trying to compete with reality stars and teen heart-throbs. Just focus on keeping real and becoming an expert in your field on Twitter and other social media networks.

Oh and don?t forget to ;)
