LTE's frequent gotcha has been indoor coverage: as it often relies on high frequency ranges outside of the US, the signal can drop off quickly at home or in the mall. There have been LTE femtocells before to fill in the gaps, but NTT DoCoMo claims to have the first mini cell site that would cover our needs much more thoroughly. The Japanese carrier's new base station run simultaneous 112.Mbps LTE and 14.4Mbps HSDPA (sorry, no HSUPA upload speeds) on the 2GHz band to keep 3G data and voice working side-by-side with 4G, piping both through a wired broadband connection; there's no need to sacrifice the basics or legacy support just for a better LTE signal. NTT DoCoMo plans to sell the dual-mode femtocell to local homeowners, offices and stores in December. Sadly, there's no immediate word of plans for femtocells that support networks abroad, although the technology's existence gives us hope that we'll see it spread to other providers -- and that black holes in cellular coverage will be distant memories.

Last week, I discussed?equitable remedies?in breach of contract situations.? I would like to shift gears for a while and do some information specifically aimed at startups, as this upcoming weekend is?Startup Weekend Honolulu?at the?Box Jelly, coworking space. ?If you have not signed up, you can check out the info here, and recommend trying it once as it is a very unique experience and you meet a lot of people.

My goal with the next month?s worth of posts is to deal with frequent misconceptions by people who are starting up their business.

Anyway, this post and the next one is aimed and clearing up some of the notions about the various ?trade? legal aspects. Namely, I will be discussing the difference between trade names and trademarks, and what is a trade secret. I frequently run across clients and people who are very confused when they first start out their business and it is crucial for your legal protection of your business that you get the differences.
?

Trade Name vs. Trademark: Explaining the Difference

A trade name is NOT the same as a trademark.? While, both are definitely a part of trade and business they both operate and serve different roles.? Let?s use an example to walk through the way these two legal concepts are different.

Let?s say Mr. Joey Nakamura wants to sell his specialty brand of shave ice.? Let?s say Mr. Nakamura ignores my very?first Draw the Law post, and does not want to create some kind of business structure with limited liability.? Therefore, he is a sole proprietor, but he does not want to sell his specialty brand of shave ice under his personal name.? So he registers a trade name and does business as JN Specialty Shave Ice.? This is his trade name.

While, developing his shave ice Joey then decides to create several unique flavors that are his signature products.? So he creates the Joey?Jabuticaba?and Nakamura Nectarine and begins packaging and labeling the bottled flavors as such.? These products in the marketing world are his brand names, which are advertising and marketing terms, but in the legal world these are his trademarks.

Thus the difference is a trade name functions to identify the particular business, and for a lot of people they know this as ?doing business as?, but the concept actually includes corporate, llc, partnership, and fictitious names.? It is simply the name you are using to identify your business.

Trademarks, are any words, names, symbols, or devices (or a combination of those things) that are used to identify and distinguish your goods from those of others and to indicate the source of the goods (or services for service marks), even if the source is unknown.

Where the Confusion Comes In

Why do people mix these two up?? Well, it is very easy because many businesses use their name to identify their goods and services, for instance here in Hawaii, ?American Savings Bank? and ?Hawaiian Airlines? both are a trade name and trademark.? Your name can function both as a trade name and as a trademark, so long as it does not infringe on the rights of another.? Furthermore, a single business can own dozens of different trademarks to identify their various brands.

Why is the Distinction is Important?

Well, for some starting businesses they start out and register a business, then want to use another name.? Therefore they register a trade name thinking they are protected from trademark infringement.? As shown above, they are different and function so.? Further, when you start using your trade name you may be giving rise to trademark infringement on your part.? That?s right your name may be causing confusion in the marketplace because it may exist as someone else?s registered trademark.?? At that point you would have to get a new name, which as experienced marketers will tell you is a blow to your marketing strategy and will force a costly re-branding.

Even moderate drinking in pregnancy can affect a child's IQ

ScienceDaily (Nov. 14, 2012) ? Relatively small levels of exposure to alcohol while in the womb can influence a child's IQ, according to a new study led by researchers from the universities of Bristol and Oxford using data from over 4,000 mothers and their children in the Children of the 90s study (ALSPAC) and published November 14 in PLOS ONE.

Current advice to pregnant women about moderate alcohol consumption during pregnancy is contradictory, with some official guidelines recommending complete abstinence and others suggesting that moderate use is safe. Previous studies have produced conflicting and inconsistent evidence on the effects of moderate alcohol intake on a child's IQ. This may be because it is difficult to separate the effects of moderate alcohol consumption from other lifestyle and social factors, such as smoking, diet, affluence, mother's age and education.

This study, believed to be the first substantial one of its kind, used genetic variation to investigate the effects of moderate (<1-6 units of alcohol per week) drinking during pregnancy among a large group of women and their children. Since the individual variations that people have in their DNA are not connected to lifestyle and social factors, the approach removes that potential complication.

Four genetic variants in alcohol-metabolising genes among the 4,167 children were strongly related to lower IQ at age eight. The child's IQ was on average almost two points lower per genetic modification they possessed.

But this effect was only seen among the children of women who were moderate drinkers. There was no effect evident among children whose mothers abstained during pregnancy, strongly suggesting that it was the exposure to alcohol in the womb that was leading to the difference in child IQ. Heavy drinkers were not included in the study.

When a person drinks alcohol, ethanol is converted to acetaldehyde by a group of enzymes. Variations in the genes that 'encode' these enzymes lead to differences in their ability to metabolise ethanol. In 'slow metabolisers', peak alcohol levels may be higher and persist for longer than in 'fast metabolisers'.

It is believed that the 'fast' metabolism of ethanol protects against abnormal brain development in infants because less alcohol is delivered to the fetus, although the exact mechanisms are still unclear.

Previous studies have relied on observational evidence, but this is problematic. Observational studies often find that moderate drinking is beneficial compared to abstention, but this is because mothers who drink in moderation during pregnancy are typically well educated, have a good diet and are unlikely to smoke -- all factors which are linked to higher IQ in the child, and which mask any negative effect that exposure to alcohol may have.

This study, on the other hand, looked at moderate (rather than high) alcohol intake in over 4,000 women and used a novel technique known as Mendelian randomization, which is a scientifically robust way of investigating the links between exposures and later diseases, using genetic variants which modify exposure levels and which are not influenced by lifestyle or other factors.

The mothers' alcohol intake was based on a questionnaire completed when they were 18 weeks' pregnant. It included questions on the average amount and frequency of alcohol consumption before the current pregnancy, during the first trimester, and in the previous two weeks or at the time when they first felt the baby move. One drink was specified as one unit of alcohol.

Around 32 weeks of gestation the mother completed another questionnaire in which she was asked about her average weekday and weekend alcohol consumption, from which weekly intake was derived. Any woman who reported drinking, even if it was less than one unit per week either in the first trimester or when she felt the baby first move was classified as drinking during pregnancy.

At approximately 18 and 32 weeks of pregnancy, the women were also asked on how many days during the past month they had drunk two pints of beer (or the equivalent amount of alcohol). Any women who reported doing this on at least one occasion was classified as a binge drinker for the purposes of this analysis and were excluded.

The children's IQ was tested when they were aged eight using a shortened version of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children from which an overall age adjusted total score was derived.

Speaking about the findings, the report's main author, Dr Sarah Lewis, said: 'Our results suggest that even at levels of alcohol consumption which are normally considered to be harmless, we can detect differences in childhood IQ, which are dependent on the ability of the fetus to clear this alcohol. This is evidence that even at these moderate levels, alcohol is influencing fetal brain development.'

Dr Ron Gray from the University of Oxford who led the research added: 'This is a complex study but the message is simple: even moderate amounts of alcohol during pregnancy can have an effect on future child intelligence. So women have good reason to choose to avoid alcohol when pregnant.'

Nepal Telecom (NT) on Monday commercially launched WiMax?wireless broadband internet service.

In the initial phase, the company has targeted to provide the service to the corporate customers of the Kathmandu Valley.

The NT has installed around four dozen base transcriber stations across the Valley for the purpose.

The state-owned telecom operator said that the customers subscribing to the service would be able to get maximum speed up to 20 mbps at much cheaper rate compared to other data services currently available in the local market.

Addressing the launching programme of the NT?s new data service, Minister for Information and Communications Raj Kishor Yadav said that the WiMax project would help connect country?s rural areas to information super highway.

?WiMax would greatly facilitate the government?s plan on expanding the broadband internet service to remote areas,? he said.

Through the WiMax project, the NT has been planning to take wireless broadband internet to all 3,915 VDCs of the country within a year.

Subash Chandra Sah, chief of NT?s WiMax Project, assured that the service would be covering all parts of the country in one year once installation works in the western part of the country get over.

The WiMax project has a total capacity of 200,000 lines. ?We are also in final stage to sign a contract for UBS dongle that enables general customers to use WiMax,? said Sah, adding that the service would be available to general customers in the near future.

Nepal Telecom (NT) is launching its much-talked-about WiMax technology-based broadband internet service on Monday.

In the initial phase, the company has targeted the service for corporate customers of Kathmandu such as business houses, hospitals, educational institutions, diplomatic missions, tourism entrepreneurs, government offices, NGOs and INGOs.

NT has said the internet service would offer band width of up to 20 mbps. ?The service is initially being launched with major focus on corporate segment and rural areas with minimum speed of 256 kbps,? said Guna Kesari Pradhan, spokesperson for NT. She added the service would be available to general users within three months ?after we fix some equipment related problems?.

Corporate customers will have buy Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) from NT depending on their need. As for general customers, NT will sell USB dongle. Outdoor CPE (device that is capable of providing internet signal for up to 15km radius) will cost Rs 16,000. Indoor device having range of up to 5km will cost Rs 12,000.

The 100,000 lines? capacity internet service, in the first phase of WiMax project, will have coverage within Sanga (East), Balambu (West), Budanilkantha (North) and Dakshinkali (South) of the Kathmandu Valley. Pradhan said they would be taking the WiMax data service to all parts of the country within a year after implementation of the second phase in Pokhara and Bhairahawa.

NT will provide CPEs for free to corporate customers subscribing to the service for at least a year, according to NT. To start with its new data service project, NT has unveiled three types of volume-based service packages?256 kbps, 512 kbps and 1 mbps.

The tariff will be based on packages?from 5 GB at Rs 650 per month to Rs 5,190 for 60 GB package with speed of 1 mbps or above.

NT has also fixed the tariff for WiFi service to be made available after setting up WiFi Hotspots. Customers will have to buy voucher of Rs 50 for using 200 mb internet, Rs 100 for 500 mb and Rs 200 for 1,500 mb. NT will build 1,500 WiFi Hotspots across the country at public locations such as universities, hospitals.

What?s wrong with National Health Care?

I am born and raised in the United States, and grew up believing that American medicine and health care were the best in the world ? the gold standard. And if I had not lived outside of the US I might still believe that. Having left and then returned, I now see how bloated, expensive, and convoluted our whole system is.

While we lived in Turks and Caicos the government there implemented a National Health system, based on the UK system (TCI is a British territory), and we were amazed at how well it worked. We also had private health insurance through our employer, and between the two we paid nothing for health care or prescriptions. Basically, the private insurance would cover what National Health wouldn?t, and vice versa. This even included flying to Miami for care unavailable on the islands with hotel and a per diem.

Many of my friends who live in the UK and Canada use Aviva Health Insurance for the private health insurance, and find that between Aviva and National Health they are well covered for everything they need. To listen to the health care rhetoric in the US, you would think that under any kind of national health plan there would be no private insurance options, and that?s just plain wrong. In my experience, National Health offers a base level of care to everyone, and then people who can afford it have the option of buying more comprehensive private health plans.

It simply amazes me that people in the US are so adverse to any kind of government sponsored health insurance, when everyone over 65, no matter how much money they have, uses Medicare. Medicare offers a base level of care, and for those who want there is an option to buy extended or more comprehensive private health insurance to supplement Medicare. It?s that simple, the US government has been doing this successfully for years, and it can and will work on a larger scale with Obamacare.

Government?demands for user data worldwide from Google?have "increased steadily,"?the search giant says in a new report: "One trend has become clear:?Government surveillance is on the rise."

"Government demands for user data have increased steadily since we first launched the Transparency Report," writes Dorothy Chou, Google senior policy analyst, on the company's?blog?about its latest "transparency report."

"In the first half of 2012, there were 20,938 inquiries from government entities around the world. Those requests were for information about 34,614 accounts."

The finding comes in the wake of revelations of government email?snooping in the case of former CIA director David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell.?

U.S. government agencies continue to make the most requests for user data, Google says: 7,969 such requests in the first half of the year. Google says it complied with 90 percent of those requests.

Second to the U.S. in the number of government requests for user data: India, with 2,319 requests; then, Brazil (1,566), France (1,546), Germany?(1,533) and the United Kingdom (1,425):

Here's Google's look at the number of government requests worldwide?to turn over data it has received from 2009, when it started sharing the transparency data, to now:

"You can see the country-by-country trends for requests to hand over?user data?and to?remove content?from our services in the Transparency Report itself, but in aggregate around the world, the numbers continue to go up," Chou wrote.

An important note to all of this, Chou adds:?The information shared in the report represents "only an isolated?sliver showing how governments interact with the Internet, since for the most part we don?t know what requests are made of other technology or telecommunications companies."

Google, she says, is "heartened that in the past year, more companies like Dropbox, LinkedIn, Sonic.net and Twitter have begun to share their statistics too. Our hope is that over time, more data will bolster public debate about how we can best keep the Internet free and open."

Did Petraeus' mistress leak classified info?

Former CIA Director David Petraeus and author Paula Broadwell pose for a photo. (AP)A recent University of Denver address by Paula Broadwell has set off a torrent of speculation as to whether her affair with Gen. David Petraeus resulted in a leak of classified national security information.

New York magazine got things started by posting a video of Broadwell, author of Petraeus' biography, "All In," discussing details of the Sept. 11 attack on the American Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, at the Oct. 26 talk.

In the video, since posted by several sources to YouTube, Broadwell states:?"Now, I don't know if a lot of you heard this, but the CIA annex had actually, had taken a couple of Libyan militia members prisoner, and they think that the attack on the consulate was an effort to try to get these prisoners back. So that's still being vetted."

That clip has led some to speculate whether Broadwell was exposing previously unreported details about the attack.

Other major media outlets, including CBS News and The Daily Beast, have picked up on the video clip. Wired goes a step further, stating as fact that Broadwell did reveal new information, writing: "It was a surprising disclosure, given the deep classification of the CIA's detention policies?and the enormous political stakes surrounding the Benghazi assault. But in many ways, it was only natural for Broadwell, given her evolution from Petraeus protegee to biographer to paramour and unofficial spokesperson."

And?Politico points to a July panel discussion at the Aspen Security Forum during which Broadwell claims to have had access to classified information and to have attended high-level security meetings with Petraeus.

However, Broadwell's sound bite could be entirely innocuous, New York magazine notes: "It's also possible that she just misunderstood something she heard on Fox News."

The Fox News Channel reference concerns a report FNC reporter Jennifer Griffin made earlier the same day as Broadwell's university address, in which Griffin cited sources claiming that the CIA was holding high-value detainees in the Benghazi facility at the time of the attack.

Griffin has since?updated her reporting, noting that a well-placed Washington source confirms that Libyan militiamen were being held at the CIA annex and may have been a possible reason for the attack. Multiple intelligence sources, she also reported, said "there were more than just Libyan militia members who were held and interrogated by CIA contractors at the CIA annex in the days prior to the attack. Other prisoners from additional countries in Africa and the Middle East were brought to this location."

The CIA has denied keeping militants at the facility. CIA spokesman Preston Golson said, "Any suggestion that the agency is still in the detention business is uninformed and baseless."

Piles of work may stress us out, but most Americans say they get along well with their co-workers.

There are things we like about work: Most of us feel safe on the job, for example, and many of us like our co-workers.

But most of us don't like the stress that comes with work. Oh, and we'd like a raise, please.

Just 29 percent of workers surveyed by Gallup this year?said they were completely satisfied with the level of job-related stress they have to deal with. That?s little changed from 2001, the first time Gallup did this survey, and 2011.

Our paychecks aren't thrilling us, either. Just?30 percent of full- and part-time workers said they were completely satisfied with the money they earn, also little changed from 2001 and 2011.

About 33 percent of workers surveyed by Gallup this year said they were dissatisfied with the amount of stress related to their job, while 28 percent were?dissatisfied?with the money they earn. The rest were either somewhat satisfied or completely satisfied on those measures.

Health benefits was another common area of complaint. Only 35 percent of those surveyed were completely satisfied with their health benefits, down from around 43 percent in 2009.

The tight job market certainly has made work worse for a number of people. The unemployment rate is still high, despite falling in the past few months, and about 12 million Americans are actively looking for work.

In addition, many employers expect the people who do have jobs to be working harder and harder for the same or even less pay.

But it?s not surprising that pay and stress are long-running complaints. Real median household income ? or the midpoint of American household earnings ? has been falling for the past few years and is about the same as it was more than a decade ago.

There are some things people generally like about work.

About 69 percent of workers said they were completely satisfied with their relations with co-workers, and 60 percent were satisfied with the flexibility of their hours.

About half said they were completely satisfied with their job security.

8. HeroQuest - Out of print, rare, hard to find, but super awesome!? I can't count the number of hours we played this in high school and college.? It's a little different than most board games because one player acts as the Dungeon Master who controls all of the monsters, traps, and puzzles.? An awesome game all around and there where a lot of expansions that are now even harder to find.? Keep your eyes peeled at rummage sales, thrift stores, and flea markets!
9. Blood Bowl - Cross Football with Warhammer Fantasy races and what do you get?? Blood Bowl!? That right!? Orcs, Skaven, Humans, Elves, etc playing Football in the Blood Bowl.? Not everyone gets carted off alive!? With the expansion your Necromancer can bring the dead back to play for even more first downs!? I still remember my first Blood Bowl?league in college when I went 7-1 and took home the League Championship with my Undead team and the All Star Vampire quarterback I had drafted.? Think you're coming to sack me?? Hypnotized!? Think again!? So much awesome I can't even describe it all.? At least there is a PC version of Blood Bowl out now.
10. Supremacy - Another world superpowers game, similar to Diplomacy, but this one is on a World Scale.? Where else can you try to bankrupt opposing countries, defeat them in strategic warfare, or just launch nukes to level?them or half of the entire world?? If playing with me be forewarned, I like to nuke first and ask questions later!? Another hard to get out of print special board game.

After realizing how many of my favorite games are out of print and hard to find (including ones that I couldn't even add to this list because they aren't available at all anymore!), I just realized I must be getting old.? LOL.? Regardless there are a ton of awesome games on this list, even if some of them are way more expensive now due to their rarity.? China exports accelerate in October, imports weak

BEIJING (AP) ? China's export growth accelerated in October in a fresh sign the world's second-largest economy is recovering from a painful slump, but the commerce minister warned that exporters face tough conditions in coming months.

Exports rose 11.6 percent from a year earlier, up from the previous month's 9.9 percent rate, data showed Saturday. Import growth held steady at 2.4 percent.

The improvement is a positive sign for the ruling Communist Party, which is holding a congress to hand power to younger leaders who might benefit from an economic uptick.

Still, the commerce minister warned that Chinese exporters face tough conditions ahead due to weak global demand and rising operating costs.

"The trade situation will be relatively grim in the next few months and there will be many difficulties next year," Chen Deming told a news conference.

Analysts say a modest recovery is under way from China's deepest downturn since the 2008 world financial crisis. But they say it will be gradual and too weak to drive global growth without improvement in the United States and Europe.

Data reported Friday showed Chinese auto sales, factory output and investment also improved in October.

Stronger exports will help manufacturers that were battered by last year's slump in global demand. Thousands closed and survivors slashed payrolls, raising the danger of unrest as Communist leaders tried to enforce calm ahead of the leadership transition.

The import weakness meant China's global trade surplus widened by nearly 90 percent over a year ago to $32 billion ? the highest monthly level this year.

Chen, the commerce minister, also warned that "growing trade protectionism" might hurt exporters.

World leaders pledged after the 2008 crisis to avoid steps that might hinder trade and hamper a recovery. But Beijing and trading partners including the United States, Europe and Japan have raised tariffs on goods including autos and solar panels in a series of disputes over market access, subsidies and other issues.

Beijing set a target of 10 percent trade growth this year, but it looks increasingly unlikely the country can reach that after total trade rose only about 6 percent for the first 10 months.

Lackluster Chinese import demand reflects government curbs on lending and investment to cool inflation and overheating.

Those controls helped to crush surging prices but hurt China's large construction industry and depressed its voracious appetite for steel beams, wiring and other materials made of imported iron ore, copper and other commodities. That is bad news for miners and other commodity exporters such as Australia and Brazil that supply China.

China's economic growth fell to a three-and-a-half-year low of 7.4 percent in the quarter ending in September. Analysts say the slowdown probably has reached its bottom and activity should improve in the current quarter.

The government said last month it saw "steady economic growth," suggesting there was no need for further major stimulus following interest rate cuts and higher spending on public works construction and investment by state companies.

Demand in debt-plagued Europe was so weak that the 27-nation European Union was temporarily overtaken by the United States as China's biggest trading partner for October.

Exports to the United States rose 9.5 percent to $31.2 billion. China's trade surplus with the U.S. widened by 8 percent to $21.6 billion.

Exports to Europe fell 5.8 percent to $26.4 billion, with more severe declines for some struggling economies. Italy's purchases of Chinese goods plunged 25.7 percent while exports to France were off 9 percent. China's trade surplus with Europe narrowed by 17 percent to $10.8 billion.

Sunday's annual Veterans Day Parade is expected to attract crowds of over 600,000 people to central Manhattan and will be a test for a city still struggling to clean up after one of the worst natural disasters in the region's history.

Thousands were in temporary shelters, and in New Jersey a tent city on the edge of Monmouth Park racetrack was home to hundreds. Authorities in the region said they did not have access to enough alternative housing or hotel rooms for all those who have been displaced.

There were still over a quarter of a million customers without power nearly two weeks after the storm. As of Saturday, 66,000 of those were on Long Island, where residents hit hard by the storm protested outside the headquarters of the Long Island Power Authority in Hicksville.

New Yorkers also faced their second day of gasoline rationing under a system in which cars with odd- and even-numbered license plates can fill up only on alternate days.

Electric utilities have drawn withering criticism for their failure to quickly restore power throughout the region. For many, no electricity means no heat, hot water or hot meals.

"It's been terrible," said Diane Uhlfelder, a former New York City police officer at the protest in Hicksville, where a local police officer estimated about 300 hundred gathered outside LIPA headquarters.

"The cold is the worst," she said. "It's been hell."

Sandy smashed into the East Coast on October 29, killing at least 120 people and causing an estimated $50 billion in damages and economic losses. It destroyed homes along the New Jersey Shore and around New York City, cut off electricity for millions of people and knocked out much of the public transportation system.

Newly re-elected President Barack Obama is to visit hard-hit areas of New York City on Thursday. Obama put off an earlier visit at the request of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who feared it could hinder relief efforts.

Back outside LIPA headquarters in Hicksville, two 13-year-old girls held white cardboard signs decrying LIPA's slow response. One, in pink magic marker, read: "LIPA Stinks!" The other read: "Lame, Inept, Pitiful, Awful."

As a LIPA truck drove by, the unsmiling driver gripped the wheel with his left hand and raised his right hand to give the girls the finger.

FREE FUEL

Early on Saturday in Far Rockaway, a coastal area of New York City devastated by the storm surge, more than 500 people lined up with empty fuel cans. Word had spread Friday night that a tanker truck carrying 8,000 gallons of free gasoline was to arrive around 10 a.m.

The fuel was delivered under the auspices of the Fuel Relief Fund and funded by an anonymous donor, according to two police officers on the scene.

More than a quarter of the gas stations in the New York metropolitan area did not have fuel available for sale on Friday, the same number as on Thursday, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said.

At the Inwood refinery in southern Queens, a line of more than a dozen tanker trucks stretched from the refinery entrance. Some drivers slept while they waited.

Seven tanker drivers, most of whom serve independent gas stations throughout Long Island and New York City, said the average wait in recent days to fill up their tankers was about 3 hours, and then another 90 minutes once they reached the pumps.

"We're now lucky if we can get two runs in a day," said Parkash Ram, 54, of Queens, who works for a trucking company that supplies independent gas stations on Long Island.

But there were signs fuel lines were starting to ease up. There were no gasoline lines reported at most gas stations in New Jersey as well in some places in Long Island.

COMMUNITIES ISOLATED

Bloomberg announced a day of service on Saturday and hundreds of volunteers helped stricken areas of the city.

On Staten Island, the New York City borough hit hardest by the storm, the sense of total material loss has settled in and residents were preparing their homes for demolition.

On Saturday, Yevgeniya Maltseva, 63, a Staten Island homeowner and medical office staffer was staying warm burning all five elements on her stove.

"We don't have any info at all. Con Edison (the electric utility company) is not even picking up the phone," she said.

On Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will visit Staten Island. Homes along the island's south-eastern flank took the full brunt of the Atlantic storm surge.

Subway services to coastal areas were slowly being restored. Service to Coney Island resumed on Friday, but there was still no service to Far Rockaway. Widespread delays were reported on New Jersey commuter trains.

Many communities remain isolated. At a supermarket parking lot on East Park Avenue in Long Beach late Saturday afternoon, hundreds of weary residents were met with trucks carrying donated food and water, clean-up supplies and piles of clothes.

"Out here, time doesn't mean anything anymore," said Miles Rose, 58, an IT consultant from Long Beach. "You live by the sun, and when it goes down, the day is over and you go to bed. That's how we live now."

In New York's Broad Channel community, there was a boat in the middle of a road with a sign that read: "Broad Channel - the forgotten town."

On Saturday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo extended the deadline to February for New Yorkers who lost their income due to the storm to apply for federal assistance.

A boat belonging to Staten Island-based actor Clem Caserta called the "Jimmy Whispers" after a character Caserta played in Robert de Niro's debut film "A Bronx Tale" was washed up in Harbortown, 20 miles south of Newark, New Jersey.

Sandy ripped some 300 feet of floating dock off its moorings on the Staten Island side of the Arthur Kill waterway, and pushed it about half a mile across the water along with a half dozen fishing boats.

There were 289,239 customers without power on Saturday in the states struck by Sandy, a drop of 144,901 from Friday, the U.S. Energy Department said. At the peak 8.5 million were without power.
