Ancient peoples around the world seem to have designed their sacred spaces not only for ceremonial sights, but for ceremonial sounds as well, archaeologists say.
In Peru, for example, a 3,000-year-old Andean ceremonial center's design was optimized for the blare of a priest's conch-shell trumpet. In Mexico, the Chichen Itza temple site features a staircase that can make hand claps sound like the chirp of a quetzal bird. And one of the best-known ancient monuments of all, England's Stonehenge, has a layout that's acoustically pleasing as well as astronomically significant.
The big question is, did ancient societies really have acoustics in mind when they built their monuments?
"That is a challenge," said David Lubman, a California-based acoustical scientist and consultant. Much of the evidence is circumstantial, or based on interpretations of ancient myths. But when the acoustical resonances fit so well with the purpose of a ceremonial space, it's hard to resist making a connection.
"Whether or not you have historical evidence, you have another form of evidence," said Miriam Kolar, a researcher at Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics.
Theater for the ears Researchers discussed their efforts to unravel the mysteries of ancient acoustics today at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, held in Vancouver, British Columbia.
For the past few years, Kolar and her colleagues have been focusing on Chavin de Huantar, a pre-Inca site in Peru that served as a regional religious center. People apparently came to a circular plaza to worship, and to hear an oracle's pronouncements issuing from a stone gallery.
The acoustic musicians of the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics help archaeologists unravel the mysteries of the pre-Inca Chavin temple complex - and the ritual role given to the conch.
The Stanford team conducted a detailed acoustical study of the gallery's cross-shaped passageways. They found that the central duct between the gallery and the plaza would serve as an acoustic filter system, accentuating the tones produced by the priests' ceremonial conch trumpets, known as "pututus."
"There was theater going on," Kolar said. The thrilling effect of the trumpet calls and the oracle's words may well have been heightened by the psychoactive effects of the San Pedro cactus that the Chavin people consumed during their rituals.
The chirping staircase There are theatrical touches as well at Chichen Itza, a Maya temple complex going back more than 1,000 years, Lubman said. One of the most prominent monuments is the Temple of Kukulkan, also known as El Castillo: Some researchers have argued that the temple's staircase was constructed so as to create a "feathered serpent" shadow during the spring and autumn equinoxes. Lubman says the staircase can produce an aural as well as a visual effect: When you clap your hands at just the right spot, the echo comes back sounding much like the chirp of the quetzal bird, which was sacred to the Maya.
The acoustician played an audio clip demonstrating that the bird's chirp and the clap's echo sounded remarkably similar. He speculated that a priest might have clapped his hands loudly to seek counsel from a quetzal. Worshipers would have been impressed to hear the chirp of a spectral bird, apparently coming from inside the temple. "Only priests were trained to interpret what the quetzal said," Lubman said, half-jokingly.
Lubman has been studying Chichen Itza's acoustics for more than a decade. That's such a long time that the quetzal research "should be old news," he said. "But the darn bird keeps chirping." He noted that Chichen Itza has another interesting acoustic feature: Its ball court is designed like a "whispering gallery," so that a low utterance in one corner of the court could be heard clearly in another corner.
The bottom line? Maybe the ancient Maya were more in tune with sacred sounds than we are today. "Now, many things go through our eyes before they get to our minds, but that wasn't true in the ancient world," he said.
The Stone Age and Stonehenge Steven Waller, a researcher at California-based Rock Art Acoustics, theorized that acoustics may even have had something to do with the placement of the stones at Stonehenge, a monument that's at least 5,000 years old. "What struck me was that the layout of Stonehenge reminded me of an interference pattern," he told his AAAS audience.
Waller said he was even more intrigued when he considered the legends of ancient Britain. One legend suggests that Stonehenge was created when two pipers lured maidens into a circle with their magic tunes, and then turned them into standing stones. He noted that some of Stonehenge's monoliths are sometimes called "piper stones."
Steven Waller walks around two English flutes (recorders) to illustrate how the sound changes due to wave interference. He suggests that a similar effect might have guided the placement of stones at Stonehenge.
Could ancient acoustics have been behind some of these legends? To find out, Waller conducted an experiment in which he put blindfolds on experimental subjects and had them walk around an open field in a circle while two flutes played an identical tone (1100 Hz, or C-sharp). The sound waves from the two flutes interfered with each other in such a way that the sound alternated between loud and soft in different locations. When the walkers were asked to map out the area, they came up with a pattern of obstacles and archways much like an ancient stone circle.
"It's as if there was something blocking the sound ... a ring of invisible objects, massive objects, blocking the sound," he said.
Waller also analyzed the placements of stones at Stonehenge and other neolithic stone circles, and found the acoustic parallel he was looking for. "The pillars actually cast acoustic patterns that mirror an interference pattern," he said.
The leading hypothesis about Stonehenge is that it served as a religious center that was laid out to mark the astronomical alignments for Earth's seasons, and Waller doesn't take issue with that. "My theory doesn't necessarily conflict with the solar alignment theory," he said. But is there any evidence to show that Stonehenge's designers really did have acoustics in mind? Waller can only point to the circumstantial connections ? for example, the fact that cave paintings were often put in the locations that had the best acoustics for ceremonies, or the fact that some ancient peoples thought echoes emanated from spirits inside stones.
"They didn't know about sound waves reflecting," he said.
Waller said the important thing is to be mindful of the contributions that acoustics can make to the study of sacred spaces. Some of those spaces are already in danger of disappearing. For example, Waller worried that some of the modern-day renovations aimed at making cave paintings in France more accessible to tourists may actually destroy the acoustic qualities that led the painters to those spots in the first place.
"Nobody has been paying attention to the sounds," he said. "We've been destroying the sounds."

MILWAUKEE ? Neighbors of a severely malnourished Wisconsin teenager found wandering outside, her bare feet purple and her face bleeding, say they rarely saw the girl leave home, and that when she did emerge she would scavenge through the trash and eat discarded scraps.
At least two neighbors called social services to report potential abuse at the house, but it wasn't until the 15-year-old was spotted walking outside in the cold last week wearing just thin pajamas that details of what she allegedly endured were revealed. Authorities say she was forced to stay in an unfinished basement for years and eat her own feces. Her father and stepmother have been arrested on suspicion of child abuse and neglect, and a hearing is set for Thursday.
Mark Stuntebeck, who lives next door to the family in Madison, said he called child protective services within the last two years after he saw the girl taking out the garbage and scavenging through it to find food. He doesn't know if anyone ever followed up with the girl's family.
"She seemed to be hiding and munching on crumbs or remnants of something," said Stuntebeck, 44.
Melissa Clark, 38, who lives across the street, said the girl rarely came outside but she could hear her family berating her inside the house. Clark's mother, who was visiting from Florida last year, noticed the girl and called child protective services. Clark said she doesn't know if anything was done.
Her parents once yelled at her for showing too much skin when she was bent over and her blouse hung off her, Clark said.
"It was horrible," she said. "She was treated like Cinderella."
State Department of Health Services spokesman Sara Buschman said Wednesday she couldn't immediately comment but planned to have more information Thursday.
The 40-year-old father and 42-year-old stepmother, whom The Associated Press is not naming to protect the girl's identity, were each being held on $20,000 bail after their arrests last week. Their hearing Thursday is expected to include a review of their bail and a discussion about the status of the potential charges, Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne said.
Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain said Wednesday that the teen was getting medical treatment and remained in protective custody.
The girl, who only weighed 70 pounds, told authorities she had been forced to stay in the unfinished basement of her father and stepmother's home since 2006 and that an alarm would sound if she went upstairs. She said she ate what she could find in the garbage and sometimes she was made to eat her own feces and drink her urine, according to a police affidavit.
She said if she was caught eating without permission, the couple would make her throw out the food or vomit it back up.
The allegations came to light after Mike Vega saw the girl walking in thin pajamas, barefoot and crying on a cold Feb. 6 afternoon. She was bleeding from a gash on her nose and other small scrapes and was so scrawny he mistook her for an 8-year-old. He called police.
"It was the most shocking thing I have ever seen," Vega, 31, said Wednesday, recalling the day he found her. "A little girl looking like that. I've never seen anybody look like that, to be honest."
A doctor quoted in police reports said what the girl went through before Vega found her amounted to "torture."
Vega, who lives about a mile from the girl and her family, said he was driving on a busy street not far from home when he spotted her. As he slowly passed her, he looked through his rearview mirror and saw her bare feet, which were purple from the cold. He backed up, and she told him she needed help.
Once she was inside Vega's car, she was scared at first, but Vega said she became more comfortable after he showed her photos of his three young sons and a Mary Poppins video on his cellphone.
According to police records, the girl told authorities she had been let out of the basement that day to "clean some papers" for her stepmother and that the woman became angry because she wasn't working fast enough.
The teen told Vega the stepmother threw her back downstairs but she managed to escape out a window. Vega said the girl told him she feared the woman would throw her down the stairs again. She said the woman even threatened to kill her.
Vega said the girl "wasn't crying, wasn't hysterical" when she spoke about her stepmother's alleged death threat. "But it wasn't nonchalant either," he said. "You could see fear in her eyes. It was very disturbing."
Barbara Knox, a physician at American Family Children's Hospital quoted in the police reports, told officers the malnutrition the girl suffered "poses a significant risk of death" and that chronic starvation had caused her puberty to be arrested. Knox also said the girl would be at high risk for other disorders and complications that can lead to death.
The teen said her stepmother homeschooled her using a third-grade workbook, according to the affidavit.
The girl's 18-year-old stepbrother also was arrested on a probation and parole hold. DeSpain said he couldn't comment on the arrest. Two other minors in the home were taken into protective custody, DeSpain said.
Police said they encountered the girl in 2007, when someone alleged she might have been molested by a family member. The girl did not corroborate the allegation and her family was not cooperative, police said.
She appeared healthy at the time, police said.

Stop reacting and respond. Reacting shuts down your brain. Responding jump-starts your creativity.

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) ? Director Quentin Tarantino has wrapped up filming for his new movie in Wyoming, including a scene at the National Elk Refuge.
The Jackson Hole News & Guide (http://bit.ly/AjJTgX) reported that the "Django Unchained" cast and crew were in the Jackson area last week and decided to add a scene at the refuge.
The crew saw the elk from the highway and asked for permission to have the actors walking and riding horses among the animals, refuge director Steve Kallin said. He said that was denied because it could have caused a disturbance but they were allowed to shoot some footage with elk and bison in the background at the refuge's northern feedground.
"We did have very tightly controlled access and ensured there was no disturbance to the elk or bison," he said.
The movie is a remake of a spaghetti western about a slave who becomes a bounty hunter, with Jamie Foxx in the title role. Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson also have roles in the movie, which is mostly being filmed in New Orleans.
Other Wyoming scenes were shot at the Bar BC Ranch and Kelly Warm Springs in Grand Teton National Park.
The production company spent more than $500,000 in Wyoming, which qualifies it to receive a 15 percent rebate, said Michelle Howard of the Wyoming Film Office.

Valentine?s Day is almost here, so I?m focusing this week on issues that entwine love and real estate.
Q. I have an excellent credit history, but my fiance?s credit is pretty bad. I have been told that when we marry in June, our credit histories will be merged and I will ?inherit? his bad score and become liable for the roughly $10,000 he owes on unpaid credit cards. Is this true?
A. No, it?s not true. But while getting married won?t cause your sterling record to be combined with your new husband?s, it does not mean that his poor credit won?t affect the ability of the two of you to get a mortgage or other type of credit in the future.
Each of you always will have separate credit histories, even after the marriage. However, if you apply for a post-wedding home loan or other credit jointly, the lender will consider both of your histories when making its decision whether to approve or reject the application. That means that his blemished record could require the two of you to pay a higher interest rate or larger fees for a loan, assuming that you can get one at all.
You may be able to avoid such higher charges if you personally make enough money to qualify for a loan by yourself, because only your excellent credit score would be considered by the bank. If you apply for a mortgage in your name only and are approved, you could always add your new husband?s name to the title to the home after the sale closes ? although you alone would legally remain responsible for making the payments even though your spouse would own half of the house.
Several studies have found that various financial issues, including credit problems, are the most common sources of discord among married couples. Sit down with your fiance now and have a long and completely open discussion about your respective credit, bills and income, and future goals. An honest conversation today may be uncomfortable, but could go a long way toward ensuring marital bless later.

Q. I live in a condominium that I purchased as a bachelor several years ago, but now I am planning to marry a woman who makes more money than I do. Will it be necessary to put my new wife?s name on the title to my home? Should I ask her to sign a prenuptial agreement?
A. You aren?t legally required to put your bride?s name on the title to your longtime home. Doing so will automatically give her a half-interest in the property, but no legal responsibility to help make the monthly payments unless her name is also added to the bank?s original mortgage contract or if you refinance the loan together.
Nonetheless, you probably don?t need a full-blown ?prenuptial agreement? ? legal jargon for a contract that?s signed before the wedding nuptials to spell out how each of your respective assets would be divided if the marriage ends in divorce.
Most attorneys say that pre-nups are needed only for those who are marrying someone with much less money or with much more debt, or for people who are financially responsible for children from a previous relationship.
People who are involved in a family-owned business also sometimes sign a prenuptial agreement to reduce the chance that an eventual divorce may jeopardize an enterprise that may have been in the bride or groom?s family for decades.
Discuss your real estate and other financial concerns about your upcoming wedding with an attorney, as well as with your sweetheart.

Q. My wife and I are getting divorced and have settled everything, except what we will do with our house. I want to sell it, but she wants to rent it to tenants while she lives with her mom. Would it be possible to have the divorce finalized now and then deal with the house later?
A. Yes, you can probably get the divorce completed now and figure out what to do with the home later. That?s because most states have a legal process called ?bifurcation,? which allows a divorce to be finalized as quickly as the law allows, even if a couple?s real estate or other financial issues haven?t been resolved.
Yet, bifurcating a divorce can cause a lot more problems than it solves ? especially when a longtime home is involved. Who would make the monthly mortgage payments while the financial details of the divorce continue to be negotiated? If the home is rented out, who will be responsible for finding a good tenant and how would the monthly rental income be split?
And God forbid, what would happen if one of you dies after the divorce is granted but the financial details haven?t been worked out? The issue could take one, two, or maybe even three years in court to resolve.
Your letter states that the two of you have already conquered most of the financial issues arising from the divorce, so you should probably avoid the bifurcation process and instead redouble your efforts to reach an amicable solution for the use or sale of your longtime home. Selling the house and dividing the profits would be the easiest option.
If you remain at loggerheads, either of you can file a ?partition? lawsuit that would ask a judge to order that the property be sold immediately or the profits divided.
